Fumed Silica:
WACKER has been producing fumed silica (HDK®) since 1968 and has developed a high level of expertise in this field.

HDK® is produced by the introduction of volatile chlorosilanes into a oxyhydrogen flame. Chemically, fumed silica consists of ultrapure amorphous silicon dioxide and has the appearance of a light white powder.

HDK® is used as an active filler in silicone elastomers, as a thixotropic agent in coatings, printing inks, adhesives, UP resins and plastisols or as a flow aid, for example in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food-processing industries.

Hydrophilic HDK® (Untreated)
Hydrophilic HDK® is produced by the introduction of volatile chlorosilanes into an oxyhydrogen flame. Chemically, fumed silica consists of ultrapure amorphous silicon dioxide and has the appearance of a light white powder. Hydrophilic fumed silica is wetted by water and also disperses in water.

Hydrophilic HDK® is used as a thixotropic agent in coatings, printing inks, adhesives, UP resins, plastisols, or as a flow aid, for example in the cosmetics, pharmaceutical and food-processing industries.

Hydrophobic HDK® (Treated)
Hydrophobic HDK® is produced by the chemical reaction of hydrophilic HDK® with reactive silanes, e.g. chlorosilanes or hexamethyldisilazane. Hydrophobic fumed silica is water-repellent and does not disperse in water.

Hydrophobic HDK® is used as an active filler in silicone elastomers, as a thixotropic agent in coatings, printing inks, adhesives, as well as in polar epoxy, vinyl ester or polyurethane resins.
